Bucket list fun

By Lauren Illingworth, Macaroni Kid publisher Danville/San Ramon May 5, 2024

Every Thursday, Macaroni KID Danville/San Ramon shares our picks for five things to do with your kids over the coming week. My boys and I are starting to do a bucket list of national day fun this summer.

Here are Macaroni KID Lauren Illingworth's picks for the five things to do with the kids this week. Click on the links for all the details!

1. National Country Music Day and Independence Day (July 4)

Country Music a form of popular music originating in the rural southern US. It is a mixture of ballads and dance tunes played characteristically on fiddle, banjo, guitar, and pedal steel guitar.  What better song to celebrate 4th of July than Lee Greenwood's God Bless the USA!

2. National Fried Chicken Day (July 6)

It’s tradition to consume a bucket (or two) of fried chicken. Fried chicken is addictively good and unparalleled in taste. It is consumed in high quantities daily all over the world, but on National Fried Chicken Day, it will be sinful to not indulge in fried chicken.  Fried chicken is prepared with different ingredients and methods in different communities, and countries. Cooking and trying variations of fried chicken is also traditional.

3.  National Strawberry Sundae Day (July 7)

Each year on this day, Americans combine vanilla or strawberry ice cream, strawberry sauce, fresh strawberries, and whipped cream. Make several strawberry sundaes, and enjoy this delicious treat with friends and family.

4.   National Sugar Cookie day (July 9)

The sugar cookie is believed to have originated in the mid-1700s in Nazareth, Pennsylvania. German Protestant settlers created a round, crumbly and buttery cookie that came to be known as the Nazareth Cookie.  Today, sugar cookie making and decorating has become an art form for kids and adults alike.

5.  National Pina Colada Day (July 10)

Pina Colada means ‘strained pineapple,' a reference to the freshly pressed and strained pineapple juice used in the drink.  The beverage isn't the only way to celebrate either. The day is dedicated to all things pina colada. Whether we make a dessert or snack on pina colada jelly beans, everyone can join in the day.
