5 Art Projects for Eco-Friendly Fun

Earth Day is April 22

By Lauren Illingworth April 17, 2024

Earth Day is a time to reflect on the state of our planet and the ways we can contribute to its preservation.

We can teach our children about the importance of conservation, recycling, and reducing waste by participating in Earth Day activities.

But what about at home? Encouraging young kids to create art using recycled materials sparks their creativity while teaching them valuable lessons about reusing resources and minimizing waste.

Here are five ideas for art projects your kids can do for Earth Day.

1. Make seed bombs

Soak paper scraps in water, shred them and combine the pulp with seeds until it forms a ball. Once dry, plant them in a flower pot or straight in the garden, then watch 'em grow. A tip: Wildflower seeds are your best bet since they germinate easily (and you'll be able to take in their beauty just weeks after planting).

2. Upcycle a carton into a bird feeder

Nurture your natural environment by creating a bird feeder for your winged neighbors. Simply fill empty milk cartons or plastic water bottles with bird seed. Watching feathered friends flock to the yard is bound to make your little ones smile with excitement (you, too!).

3.  Natural Leaf Printing

Apply eco-friendly paint onto a leaf, press it onto your chosen medium like paper or canvas, then gently remove the leaf to reveal a beautiful and detailed natural imprint. Repeat until you’ve created whatever design you like.

4.  Wind Socks

Instead of tossing empty toilet paper rolls and oatmeal containers, turn them into windsocks to hang on your porch. This craft is super fun for kids and only requires basic art supplies like markers, glitter, string and anything else you’d like to decorate the socks.

You might even hang some bells from one end so that it doubles as a windchime.

5. Make chair fidgets out of old tees

Give old T-shirts new life with this craft by making chair fidgets. This uses a simple braiding technique, and your kids will love helping out.
